Magnet Applications Partners with Magnequench

Partnership will help ensure magnet applications customers continue to receive High quality neodymium magnet materials as some patents expire

Magnet Applications, a subsidiary of Bunting® Magnetics Co. (Newton, KS), has partnered with Magnequench, the magnetic business unit of Molycorp Inc. and currently the only legal manufacturer and source of Neo Powders used in bonded neodymium magnets in North America.

Announcing the partnership, Magnet Applications vice president of sales Mike Miller commented, “For nearly 25 years, our customers have relied on us for magnets and assemblies incorporating compression bonded and injection molded magnets made with Molycorp Magnequench Neo Powders.  Our reputation for quality and technical expertise has made us the largest Molycorp Magnequench customer for Neo Powders in North America. In 2014, the expiration of certain Magnequench patents will permit the importation of potentially substandard neodymium powder and magnets into the United States. Magnet Applications customers, however, will continue to receive only the highest quality magnets, owing to acooperative arrangement with Magnequench providing for the continued use of only Molycorp Magnequench Neo Powders in our magnets.”

Jim Herchenroeder, the engineering vice president and North American sales manager for Molycorp Magnequench, also commented, “Neo Powders are used in a wide variety of downstream applications in the automotive, factory automation, medical device, consumer electronics, and other markets. Our cooperative arrangement with Magnet Applications ensures that their customers can expect the same high quality compression bonded and injection molded magnets they have long valued, without concern for substandard materials that could reduce magnet performance. We look forward to continuing our long and effective relationship with Magnet Applications and the entire Bunting organization.”
