Sneak Preview: IMTS 2014

To wet your whistle for what lies ahead at the International Manufacturing Technology Show on September 8-13, here’s a small sample of some equipment that you will see exhibited on the show floor at McCormick Place in Chicago.

Posted: June 4, 2014

In Booth W-2496, Vapormatt will launch the Sabre, its new wet blasting system to help small- to medium-volume manufacturers, coating centers and R&D facilities increase their output quality on a range of cutting tools.
Booth W-2250: The »Cool Injection-Plus« PCD Monoblock cutter with direct cooling through the cutting face and chip control from Lach Diamond.
Booth W-2250: The »Dia-Fliese-perfect« dressing plate from Lach Diamond is ideal for regrinding, repointing and repairing of single and multiple point profile dressing diamonds, diaform chisels, natural turning diamonds and manufacturing new tools.
Cylindricity is a function of overall roundness, straightness and taper. It can be described as the condition of bore in which all points of the surface are equidistant from a common axis. The longer the bore, the harder it is to achieve a low straightness value and, therefore, a low cylindricity value. The cylindricity tolerance can be defined as the allowable difference in radius of two coaxial cylinders that encompass all the data of the bore.
Booth N-7400: Single Stroke Honing from Sunnen is a single-pass process that sizes and finishes a bore with a series of progressively larger superabrasive tools adjusted to a pre-set diameter. Single Stroke Honing tools rotate while passing through the bore one time and then withdrawing. The machine's servo-controlled stroking system provides flexibility with adjustable speed and various feed profiles, such as pecking, short stroke, dwell, etc. Column feed and spindle speed can be varied throughout a cycle using the machine control.
Booth N-7400: Single Stroke Honing on the VSS-2 from Sunnen features the most accurate spindle alignment in the industry, combined with flexible, easy-to-use controls. Spindles are factory aligned independently for precision centering over the tooling plate to produce better bore geometry than possible when using an "average" alignment for all the spindles.
Booth E-3346: Using the Review Mode in VERICUT from CGTech on either a console or an iPad, machine movements can be simulated while stepping or playing backwards in. (first view)

As with all software programs, the accuracy of the data input will directly affect the output. An accurate model of the cutting tool and holder is required for the effective and accurate simulation of the machining process. Leading cutting tool manufacturers, such as Sandvik, Kennametal and Iscar, now make 3D solid model data available and VERICUT can read in this model data for use in the simulation process. VERICUT also interfaces with tool management systems such as TDM Systems and WinTool for access to databases storing cutting tool information. Pre-setting suppliers including Zoller and Speroni can also interface to the software, so tool offsets and exact dimensions can be applied to the simulation process.

CGTech has worked with end users and machine tool manufacturers and distributors to create accurate and effective Virtual Machine Tool configurations. These range from simple 3-axis milling machines to multi-axis machining centers; simple 2-axis lathes to complex mill-turn centers with sub-spindles and robot loading; water jet and laser cutting, and machining/polishing robots. VERICUT simulates every machine tool brand, including DMG MORI, MAZAK, Makino, Matsuura, Hermle, Chiron, Starrag, WFL, Nakamura-Tome, and many more.

With the growth of the various additive manufacturing processes, CGTech has also developed programming and simulation of the CNC processes used in this technology area, including automated composites fiber-placement and tape-laying. The automated drilling and fastening machines used for the production of aero-structure components are also supported by VERICUT Drilling & Fastening (VDAF). It allows the user to visualize and simulate CNC drilling and fastening machines using the same NC program code that will be run on the machine. Simulation is independent of programming, and VDAF can simulate NC programs from any programming system for any CNC-automated drilling and fastening machine.

With the modular format of VERICUT, the software provides flexibility so that companies purchase only the capabilities they need. It is easy to add modules as required as CGTech provides a license that gives immediate access. VERICUT runs on Windows platforms and is delivered as both a 32-bit and 64-bit application. G-codes and CAM center-line (CL) formats are supported. cgtech.com

NEW WET BLASTING SYSTEM FOR CUTTING TOOLS
In Booth W-2496, Vapormatt Ltd. (Taunton, UK) will launch its new wet blasting system, the Vapormatt Sabre. The Sabre has been developed due to high demand from small to medium volume manufacturers, coating centers and R&D facilities for a cost-effective, high performance wet blasting tool to increase output quality on a range of cutting tools.

The unique nozzle formation of the Sabre focuses blast guns on the faces and cutting edges delivering consistent and controllable results. Total coverage of tools is ensured, offering edge radii within ± 5 micron (0.0002 in) tolerance of specification and a much improved surface for coating adhesion. Because it carries an option to fit both Y- and X-axis nozzle arrangements, the Sabre offers not just customization opportunities but also hybrid functionality. In this one unit, round shank tools, ranging from 3 mm to 30 mm (0.118 in to 1.81 in) diameter and 46 mm to 307 mm (1.85 in to 12.08 in) in length, can be processed, but so too can cutting inserts and the Sabre can hold up to four Wendt or three Manz trays at a time. With a footprint of just 3.28 m² (35.3 ft²), the Sabre saves space too. www.vapormatt.com

SPACE-SAVING, SIMPLE AUTOMATION OF VERTICAL MACHINING CENTERS
In Booth E-4871, Lang Technovation, Inc. (Hartland, WI) will introduce its new ECO Compact 20 Space-Saving and Simple Automation System that is designed for complete ease of use and flexibility within a production shop. It is ideal for use with vertical machining centers, housing 20 pallets in a 2 m x 2 m footprint, saving valuable manufacturing space without sacrificing capacity.

The system is shipped as a pre-adjusted, ready-to-use unit that functions on only two M-codes which allow for fast and simple installation. The unit is easily adjustable featuring a long loading arm with a travel capability up to 1200 mm. The ECO Compact 20 is extremely flexible and simple to maneuver which makes it easy to re-deploy throughout the manufacturing facility by forklift. It can be configured with the loading door on the front or side. The loading arm can be offset at 9 deg or 18 deg for hard-to-reach tables. Linear guides and rails are available to ensure accessibility. The company also offers different colors to match the machining center at no extra charge. www.lang-technovation.com

PUSHING THE ENVELOPE IN CNC TECHNOLOGY
From the job shop to the retrofit operation, moldmakers to mass production departments at the world’s leading auto, aero and medical manufacturers, Siemens Industry, Inc. (Elk Grove Village, IL) continues to push the envelope on CNC technology by showcasing its family of CNC products in Booth E-5010.

With the introduction of the 808 at IMTS in 2012, we took a bold step into the job shop world, as this basic CNC brings the power, flexibility and reliable performance of Siemens technology to the job shop. Already accepted as an OEM component by numerous mill and lathe builders, the 808 provides job shops the unique opportunity to apply advanced and unmatched CNC power to their existing machines, breathing “new life into old iron,” as the saying goes.

The 808 rounds out the growing family of CNC models from Siemens, which now spans the range from the most basic 3-axis machines to most advanced five-axis machining centers, with full robotic integration, secondary ops management and transfer line capability, all on a single control, the 840D, still the benchmark by which all other CNC technology in the market is judged. Simply put, nobody matches the muscle of Siemens.  Come to our booth and see the difference. Productivity in Motion! www.siemenscnc.com
