The Lincoln Electric Company (Cleveland, OH) teamed up with the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio for a special STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) learning program on October 4 that was designed to introduce many of the girls to the welding and manufacturing fields.

Girl Scout Cadettes in grades 6, 7 and 8 met with some of the women who help run the company and also experienced hands-on virtual reality welding on the VRTEX welding system. Approximately 65 girls from eight counties in North East Ohio participated in the event.

Part of being a Girl Scout is learning about the organization’s three keys to leadership: Discover Connect and Take Action. With that in mind, Girl Scouts of North East Ohio and Lincoln Electric first held a pilot program for 20 Girl Scouts on April 5 of this year.

Girls who participated said the event was very successful, with such comments proving that there is an appetite for this type of programming. The Girl Scouts of North East Ohio expanded the program to reach more troops with the event in October.

As part of the organization’s educational programming, Girl Scouts can take part in a variety of themed learning opportunities, including STEM, Community Engagement, Healthy Living, The Arts, Financial Literacy and Environmental Awareness.

Their recent visits to Lincoln Electric’s headquarters immersed them in a STEM environment and introduced them to career options in STEM-related fields, including manufacturing, engineering and welding.

Girl Scouts of North East Ohio hopes that continued STEM programming through partnerships with industry leaders, such as Lincoln Electric, will help girls develop and grow an ongoing interest in science, as well as better understand the importance and value of welding and other manufacturing careers.

Lincoln Electric is the world leader in the design, development and manufacture of arc welding products, robotic arc welding systems, plasma and oxyfuel cutting equipment and has a leading global position in the brazing and soldering alloys market. The company has 45 manufacturing locations, including operations and joint ventures in 19 countries and a worldwide network of distributors and sales offices covering more than 160 countries.
