Okuma America Corporation (Charlotte, NC), a world-leader in CNC machine tool manufacturing, hosted high school students from the Floyd D. Johnson Technology Center, York Comprehensive High School (York, SC) on Friday, March 13, in Charlotte. The unique “A Day at Okuma America Corporation” event gave students the opportunity to learn more about CNC machining technology and career opportunities in the machine tool industry.

The pre-engineering students toured the company’s headquarters, the Aerospace Center of Excellence and the Partners in THINC technology center. Okuma America president and chief operating officer Jim King and company sales and technical professionals educated students about career opportunities as engineers, machine tool operators, programmers and service professionals. The students viewed live cutting demonstrations on state-of-the-art machine tools in addition to trying their hand at the manual art of hand scraping.

“Community outreach is important to us. We’re pleased to be able to showcase our facilities and technology and introduce students to the wide variety of career options available in the manufacturing industry. Hopefully their time spent here ignites a passion for the machine tool industry,” said King.
