Roll-Kraft Ltd. (Mentor, OH) was pleased to welcome the 7th and 8th grade classes from the local Chardon schools to visit the company and tour the factory. The students were greeted by tour guides who accompanied them through the various manufacturing operations and explained each process. They observed the transformation of raw steel into roll tooling, which is then shipped to companies around the world, who manufacture products for the marketplace. This custom roll tooling is used in the tube and pipe and roll forming industry to make a multitude of products that are used by the general population every day.

The students also toured the offices of the Mentor headquarters. They were interested to see how much of the manufacturing process is highly automated and computer driven. During the visit, they observed a demonstration of the Copra Finite Element Analysis software which is used to design a “virtual” set of tooling and test roll setups and operation before manufacturing begins, in order to improve any areas of weakness in the design.

Each group of students enjoyed lunch and were encouraged by the human resources manager to pursue studies in math, english, interpersonal relations, lean manufacturing, and various computer programs, in order to prepare for the years beyond graduation, whether they enter the manufacturing field or choose another.

Roll-Kraft is committed to continuing to promote careers in manufacturing to today’s students. The company is proud to be an active member of the Alliance for Working Together (AWT; Mentor, OH). The AWT is a group of Northeast Ohio manufacturers who share a common mission: “To change the misperception of American manufacturing, shape the next generation of manufacturing professionals, and promote careers in manufacturing.”
