Sandvik Coromant (Sandviken,Sweden) strengthens its offering in digital manufacturing by the acquisition of Prometec (Aachen, Germany), a leading supplier of advanced solutions for monitoring and control of machining processes in production machines. The company also supplies equipment for laser beam diagnostics and primarily operates in the European and North American market. A large part of the customer base comes from the global automotive industry.

Prometec has 35 employees and in the fiscal year 2014/2015 had sales of approximately 48 MSEK. This acquisition includes all shares in Prometec Germany. The company will be integrated with Sandvik Coromant, a product area within Sandvik Machining Solutions. The acquisition is a step forward in Sandvik Machining Solutions’ focus on digital solutions and to further drive the development of digital offerings to customers and add value to the customers’ value chain.

“The acquisition is a natural step in line with their long-term strategy to develop attractive solutions in the field of digital manufacturing, also called Industry 4.0. In this area, we want to offer our customers monitoring solutions that support both, the planning and the control of production. They already have a product offering within digital manufacturing and, by the acquisition of our company, we can offer our customers new opportunities for providing solutions across the value chain,” stated the new managing director for Prometec, Dr. Klaus Christoffel, who was previously the manager of product management and design for Sandvik Coromant in Gemany.

“The acquisition of Prometec has great importance for several reasons. They add an important skill set in the field of digital manufacturing and, together with us, open new business opportunities for an expansion in this area,” says Klas Forsström, the president of Sandvik Coromant.

“This acquisition will constitute a solid base for continued growth, from which also our customers worldwide will benefit. Thus, we secure a further competitive advantage,” added Dr. Werner Kluft, the founder and previous sole shareholder of Prometec Germany.

Part of global industrial engineering group Sandvik AB (Stockholm, Sweden), Sandvik Coromant is at the forefront of manufacturing tools, machining solutions and knowledge that drive industry standards and innovations demanded by the metalworking industry now and into the next industrial era. Educational support, extensive research and development investment and strong customer partnerships ensure the development of machining technologies that change, lead and drive the future of manufacturing. The company owns over 3,100 patents worldwide, employs over 8,000 staff, and is represented in 130 countries.
