The highly popular DT-1 Drill/Tap center from Haas Automation, Inc. (Oxnard, CA) is now available with a 20,000 rpm inline direct-drive spindle, giving shops the ability to run higher feedrates for small tools and high-speed machining operations. The optional 20K spindle is ideal for applications that require high spindle speeds, and powerful enough to mill hard-to-machine materials. It allows rigid tapping to 5,000 rpm, with up to four times retract speed to reduce cycle times. The spindle is powered by a 15 hp vector drive system that yields 16 ft-lb of cutting torque, and the motor is coupled directly to the spindle to reduce heat, increase power transmission, and provide excellent surface finishes.

The DT-1 is a lean-style machining center with a compact footprint that allows multiple machines to be placed side-by-side, allowing for the most efficient use of valuable shop floor space. It features a generous 20 in x 16 in x 15.5 in work cube and 26 in x 15 in T-slot table, while maintaining a very small footprint. The machine provides cutting feedrates to 1,200 ipm for high-speed milling, and the 20+1 side-mount tool changer swaps tools quickly to reduce non-cutting time. High-speed 2,400 ipm rapids combine with high acceleration rates to shorten cycle times and increase throughput.

For efficient chip removal, the DT-1 features steeply sloped internal sheet metal. Optional twin chip augers transport chips to exit at the rear of the machine, allowing multiple machines to be placed close together. A 45-gallon flood coolant system is standard, with options for a programmable coolant nozzle and high-pressure through-spindle coolant systems.

The successful Drill/Tap/Mill product line has now been expanded with a pair of high-speed, lean-style machining centers – the DT-2 and DM-2 – that provide the same high acceleration rates, fast axis speeds, and short tool change times as their smaller brethren, while offering an additional 8 in (203 mm) of X-axis travel and table length – with only a slight increase in footprint.

The new DT-2 and DM-2 are identical in specifications, except for spindle taper and tool changer. The DT-2 is a BT30 taper machine with a 15,000 rpm inline direct-drive spindle and a high-speed 20+1 side-mount tool changer. It is available with an optional 20,000 rpm spindle. The DM-2 is a 40 taper machine with a 15,000 rpm inline direct-drive spindle and a high-speed 18+1 side-mount tool changer. The new DT and DM both allow high-speed rigid tapping to 5,000 rpm, with up to four times retract speed to shorten tapping cycles.

Both machines offer a 28 in x 16 in x 15.5 in (508 mm x 406 mm x 394 mm) work cube and a 34 in x 15 in (864 mm x 381 mm) T-slot table. The increased table size, longer X-axis travel, and larger work envelope easily accommodate multiple fixtures and multi-spindle rotary tables for increased production and setup flexibility. Yet, their compact footprint still allows multiple machines to be placed side-by-side for efficient use of valuable shop floor space.

The spindle on both machines features a 15 hp (11.2 kW) vector drive system that provides 46 ft-lb (62 Nm) of cutting torque. The spindles are coupled directly to the motors to reduce heat, increase power transmission, and provide excellent surface finishes. Cutting feedrates for both machines are 1,200 ipm (30.5 m/min), and 2,400 ipm rapids and high acceleration rates combine to shorten cycles times and increase throughput.

For efficient chip removal, the DT-2 and DM-2 feature steeply sloped internal sheet metal. Optional twin chip augers transport chips to exit at the rear of the machine, allowing multiple machines to be placed close together. A rear chip-lift auger is also available for higher-volume applications. A 45 gal (170 L) flood coolant system is standard, with options for a programmable coolant nozzle, and high-pressure through-spindle coolant systems. A wide selection of options is available to further boost productivity, including high-speed machining software, wireless tool and work probing, 4th- and 5th-axis capability, and much more.

All built in the U.S., the DT-1 Drill/Tap center, the DT-2 Drill/Tap Center and DM-2 Drill/Mill Center are backed by the worldwide network of Haas Factory Outlets – the most extensive system of support and service in the industry.
