Flexible 5-Axis HMC For High Productivity and Absolute Precision

The FP 4000 5-axis horizontal machining center from Heller Machine Tools uses twin drives in the Z axis for heavy duty cutting, combined milling and drilling operations, or 5-sided machining in a single setup for contract manufacturing or tool and die work where 5-axis milling is needed for productivity and process dependability.

The FP 4000 5-axis horizontal machining center from Heller Machine Tools (Troy, MI) has twin drives in the Z-axis that offer new levels of flexibility and absolute precision for contract manufacturing or tool and die work where 5-axis milling is needed for productivity and process dependability. With a work area of 800 mm x 800 mm x 1,045 mm (X/Y/Z), this HMC provides superior work envelope accessibility with robust axis drives. The fifth axis provided by the tool and is the basis for achieving maximum process dependability. Proven 5-axis kinematics are provided by the tool in X, Y, C and/or A-axis and two axes provided by the workpiece in Z and B. The machine handles workpiece loads of up to 1,400 kg on a 500 mm x 630 mm pallet.

This machining unit, providing 44 kW power and 242 Nm torque, is among the most powerful 5-axis 10,000 rpm spindles with HSK63 spindle taper on the market. The power provided is available at any spatial angle. As a result, the FP 4000 enables heavy duty cutting, combined milling and drilling operations, or 5-sided machining in a single setup. Even in 5-axis simultaneous milling, the machine maintains dimensional and contouring accuracy as well as economic efficiency. A 16,000 rpm, 40 kW machining head is an option for the FP 4000. In combination with a flexible pallet system, system availability can exceed 90 percent without restrictions in terms of chip removal rate when equipped with the PCU 63 Power Cutting Universal swivel head unit. According to Heller engineers, temperature curves of a 5-axis machine inevitably vary throughout a day of production. However, due to the construction and thermal stability of the machine, temperature does not influence its precision. This level of precision (down to the µ range) is provided by absolute encoded, direct measuring systems, high resolution rotary encoders and YRT bearings with integrated measuring system.

The machine is available with a 54-place, 80-place, 160-place, 240-place or 409-place tool magazine and Siemens 840D sl control. Machine specifications include:

  • Acceleration (Power/Speed)              6 m/s²
