FABTECH 2014: Material Handling, Metal Forming & Fabrication, Measurement

Here are some reviews of the material handling, metal forming and fabrication systems and measurement equipment being exhibited at this year’s show.

Posted: October 9, 2014

Booth B-4969: Workstation Bridge Cranes from Spanco can be floor or ceiling-mounted, depending on the needs of the operation. Their rectangular-shaped coverage areas can handle multiple workstations or even cover the entire facility to create a comprehensive material handling solution.
Booth A-2560: The FiberMark and FiberMark Fusion Laser flying-optics based systems from Epilog Laser allow users to quickly and easily mark a myriad of metals and engineered plastics with barcodes, serial numbers, data matrix codes, logos and more.
Booth A-2553: The new CONTURA coordinate measuring machine from ZEISS uses navigator technology for active sensors that allows faster scanning of circular features while also increasing accuracy.
Booth A-3059: No matter what the size or shape of the project, the SCRAPE-N-BURR metal cleaning tool has the blade to clean it. Whether your shop is welding flat steel or tube steel with a radius corner, we have the right sized blade for you weldment clean-up.

OVERHEAD EFFICIENCY AND FLEXIBILITY FOR THE ENTIRE PRODUCTION LINE
In Booth B-4969, Spanco® Workstation Bridge Cranes from Spanco, Inc. (Morgantown, PA) are an ergonomic solution for extending lift coverage and providing full access of movement throughout your entire facility. With a Bridge Crane a single worker can easily move loads up to 4,000 lb, virtually eliminating the need for manual lifting.

Workstation Bridge Cranes from Spanco feature high performance enclosed track that provides smooth running trolley movement that is three times easier to operate and control than other track systems. The V-Shaped Track Profile prevents dust, debris, and ice from accumulating on the track. The self-cleaning V-Shape also helps maintain wheel alignment for end trucks and trolleys, ensuring effortless travel for years to come.

ADVANCED PUNCHING MACHINE DEBUTS
In Booth B-1903, TRUMPF Inc. (Farmington, CT) will introduce the TruPunch 2000 with the SheetMaster Compact to the North American market. With its innovative on-demand drive technology, the hydraulic system only runs when the punch head is active, minimizing the energy consumption of the machine and the load on the system. The machine features a 50 in x 100 in working range and can process material up to 0.250 in thick.

As part of the TruPunch product portfolio, fabricators also profit from the company’s high standards in punching performance, including impressive axes speeds, high maximum stroke rates, and short setup times. With full 360 deg tool rotation and tabbed sheet automation capabilities, the TruPunch 2000 is flexible as well as accurate. The machine is controlled by a user-friendly touch screen interface which graphically displays the program and all essential information – keeping operators in control, regardless of their experience level. These and other features make it the ideal choice for fabricators in need of productivity and process reliability at a competitive investment and operating cost. www.us.trumpf.com

FIBER LASER DIRECT METAL MARKING FOR FAST, EFFICIENT SERIALIZATION & BARCODING
In nearly every industry today there is an increasing demand for cost-effective metal marking solutions. Whether manufacturers need to mark parts with unique identification (UID) marks for tracking purposes, mark barcodes for serialization regulations, or even mark logos or text for branding initiatives, the need for convenient and effective metal marking solutions has never been greater.

While CO2 laser systems have long been popular in the woodworking, signage and awards/engraving industry, these types of laser systems are not ideally suited for marketing bare metals in a quick and efficient way.

To meet this increased demand for metal marking solutions, Epilog Laser Corporation (Golden, CO) offers the FiberMark and FiberMark Fusion Laser systems in Booth A-2560. These flying-optics based laser systems allow users to quickly and easily mark a myriad of metals and engineered plastics with barcodes, serial numbers, data matrix codes, logos and much more.

An overview and demonstration of the FiberMark Fusion Laser system from Epilog Laser.

The original FiberMark, developed in 2006, features a 24 in x 12 in engraving table, and the FiberMark Fusion system has a 32 in x 20 in work space. Both systems are 100 percent USA-made, are available in watt configurations up to 50, can mark a variety of bare metals and engineered plastics, and feature:

  • In-cabinet LED lighting
  • Moveable home position
  • Raster/Vector color mapping

WELDMENT CLEAN-UP TOOL
In Booth A-3059, SCRAPE-N-BURR® (Neenah, WI) is a proven superior metal cleaning tool. No matter what the size or shape of the project, we have the blade to clean it. Whether your shop is welding flat steel or tube steel with a radius corner, we have the right sized blade for your weldment clean-up.

A demonstration of the SCRAPE-N-BURR metal cleaning tool.

The original SCRAPE-N-BURR flat blades are offered in 1-1/2 in, 3 in and 4-1/2 in widths. Our Contoured blade design, introduced in 2013, is designed to fit the contour of both round tube and radiused corners on square/rectangular tubing. The Contoured blade design allows for more blade contact area on any radius, while still providing the ability to clean flat steel surfaces as well. The Contoured Blades are available for mechanical tubing from ¾ in to 2 in diameter in ¼ in increments. All Blades are made with DuaLast Edge Technology and fit the same SCRAPE-N-BURR heavy duty TIG welded handle for complete versatility. Try one out today! www.scrapenburr.com

COORDINATE MEASURING MACHINES SCAN FASTER
In Booth A-2553, ZEISS Industrial Metrology LLC (Maple Grove, MN) introduces several new products this year that enhance customer productivity, increase accuracy and reduce energy consumption. The new CONTURA coordinate measuring machines with navigator technology for active sensors allow faster scanning of circular features while also increasing accuracy. The QuickChange option, which accelerates how fast the machine automatically changes sensors, is also available for the CONTURA aktiv. The AirSaver option can also be integrated for more savings as it reduces compressed air consumption by up to 60 percent depending on the application.

The new CALYPSO 2014 software contains dozens of new commands that shorten the time it takes to create a measurement program. Some key highlights include touch-enabled functionality that allows faster modification of 3D models and measurements, 100 percent measurement run simulation, and the ability for a user to adapt the interface to their own personal needs. www.zeiss.com/metrology
