Niagara Cutter, LLC (Reynoldsville, PA), a subsidiary of Seco Tools, LLC (Troy, MI), has expanded its line of multi-flute end mills for high-speed milling applications and peel milling strategies with the new S638 and S638R six-flute tools that complete the family of multi-flute end mills by being able to take larger radial depths of cut as compared with the seven- and nine-flute tools in the line. The end result being higher metal removal rates, reduced cycle times and increased throughput.

An AlTiN coating allows these end mills to achieve long, predictable tool life in milling applications that involve high temperatures and abrasive workpiece materials, such as titanium and pH stainless steels. The eccentric OD relief on the S638 and S638R also adds to increased tool life by providing a stronger cutting edge. Furthermore, the variable indexing on these end mills reduces harmonics for smooth cutting and high surface finishes. Diameters for the Niagara S638 and S638R range from 0.375 in to 1 in with up to 2.5 times the diameter of flute length. These tools also feature common aerospace radii and a dead sharp option. An application example for these end mills might include the processing of wing spars from large titanium castings.

The company has also developed the new Universal Drill with optimum performance and value in mind. This solid-carbide drill combines a special multi-purpose geometry with advanced coating technology to provide reliable, predictable tool life and the lowest cost per hole, especially in high-volume production environments. The Universal Drill’s rigid four-facet point geometry provides excellent centering capability, maintains an IT8/9 hole tolerance and is easy to regrind. A polished AlCrN coating gives the drill high abrasion resistance, toughness and good chip evacuation capabilities.

Well suited for holemaking applications across all industry segments and a wide scope of workpiece materials, including steels, stainless steels and cast irons, the versatility of the Universal Drill helps reduce required tooling inventories. Available drill diameter sizes range from 3 mm to 20 mm with increments of 0.1 mm. For efficient chip evacuation, the 5xD and 3xD length drills with cylindrical shanks offer the option of through-tool coolant capability. All Universal Drills are compatible with Seco shrinkfit holders, hydraulic chucks and high-precision collet chucks.
