Conveyor Manages Stringy and Birds-Nest Chips from Turning and Milling Operations

Designed to fit into most CNC lathes and machining centers with little or no effect on the space required, the MunchMan II Conveyor from Jorgensen eliminates costly machine downtime with very effective chip and scrap removal.

A unique twin-belt conveyor arrangement at the lower curve and through the incline and chip discharge areas of the MunchMan II Conveyor from Jorgensen uses primary and secondary belts running in unison to grab hold of chips, compress them and securely carry them up steep inclines, eliminating the risk of conveyor jams caused by chip balls tumbling at the lower curve or jamming in the conveyor incline section.
With a centerless screw design for removal of small metal chips, fines, and sludge from machining operations when space requirements restrict the use of other types of conveyors for chip removal, the Auger Conveyor from Jorgensen can be built in a very low profile to fit into tight areas where the envelope is restricted.

The MunchMan® II Conveyor from Jorgensen Conveyors, Inc. (Mequon, WI) is an improved release of a unique and very effective chip and scrap removal conveyor for the machine tool industry that is proving to be the most successful way to manage the long stringy and birds-nest chips generated by high speed turning and milling operations on the market today. The MunchMan II employs a unique twin-belt conveyor arrangement at the lower curve and through the incline and chip discharge areas of the system. The primary and secondary belts run in unison to grab hold of chips, compress them and securely carry them up steep inclines, eliminating the risk of conveyor jams caused by chip balls tumbling at the lower curve or jamming in the conveyor incline section. This patent-pending system is both efficient and cost effective in eliminating costly machine downtime. It can be designed to effectively fit into most of today’s CNC lathes and machining centers, with little or no effect on the space required vs. traditional single belt chip conveyors.

Jorgensen also offers their Auger Conveyor with a centerless screw design for removal of small metal chips, fines, and sludge from machining operations when space requirements restrict the use of other types of conveyors for chip removal. “These conveyors can be built in a very low profile to fit into tight areas where the envelope is restricted,” says John D’Amico, the co-principal/director of sales and marketing for Jorgensen. “Many of today’s metal cutting machining centers are equipped with auger conveyors inside the machine to transport the chips and coolant to an external conveyor. We can design and build replacement augers for these internal conveyors, or complete replacement auger conveyors.” They will also design and build the auger conveyors to the particular size requirements of the application. This Auger Conveyor is recommended in metal chip removal, scrap handling and bulk material handling applications:

  • Its low profile design is ideal for removal of small granular materials and metal chips where space is limited. It features a centerless screw design. Perforations can be incorporated in the auger trough to allow coolant drainage.
  • The conveyor is engineered to meet specifications for length and width to insure a proper fit. Jorgensen can replace existing auger flight bars for most manufacturers’ conveyors.
