Improved Handheld LIBS Capabilities for Quality Assurance

Rigaku’s KT Series of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) analyzers for metal forming, fabricating, welding, and finishing includes the KT-100S. Via the Drill Down feature, the analyzer automatically burns through imperfections to obtain a clean reading.

Rigaku’s KT-100S laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) analyzer detects 1100, 6061, and 6063 aluminum (Al) grades as well as Al and silicon (Si) brasses and bronzes or Be in coppers. Password protection and automatic “sleep mode” improve safety and battery life.

Smaller and lighter than other handheld laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) analyzers, the KT-100S from Rigaku Analytical Devices (Wilmington, MA) provides on-the-spot material identification in a ruggedized form designed for tough environments.

Driven by advancements in laser and spectrometer miniaturization and designed for durability per U.S. Military Standard 810G (MIL-STD-810) “Environmental Engineering Considerations and Laboratory Tests,” the KT-100S detects the most popular aluminum (Al) grades – 1100, 6061, and 6063 – as well as Al and silicon (Si) brasses and bronzes or Be in coppers.

Because metal is usually dirty and oxidized, the analyzer automatically burns through common imperfections to obtain a clean reading via a feature called Drill Down.

Elemental composition and grade identification are easy to obtain and read with the QuickID software’s rapid matrix selection and percentages displayed in simple “match/no match” format. Users can quickly add new alloys to the analyzer’s library. Images captured by its camera can be transferred into a report via USB or Wi-Fi.

The pistol-shaped analyzer enables one-handed operation via raised buttons or quick-launch navigation buttons located near the trigger. Tilt screen enables operator to read results in any light and can be operated as a touchscreen. Kick stand grab-and-go position provides added convenience.
