(St-Laurent, QC) The pursuit of stronger, more durable, and cost-effective gears is an unswerving goal on every gear manufacturer’s roadmap to product excellence. The “Improvement of Gear Life and Performance” webinar by Nitrex is a walk-through of a number of practical ways to optimize gears for greater results. Focusing on surface treatments, primarily nitriding and carburizing, our two speakers bring different perspectives and industry-specific know-how and practices to the topic – from the view of an equipment supplier and a commercial heat-treating services provider.

Nitrex heat treat experts Jack Kalucki and Mark Hemsath provide a deep dive perspective on nitriding, deep nitriding, and carburizing with case studies and shop floor examples of gear applications relating to the automotive including electric vehicle, wind energy, turbine, and pump industries. A comparison between nitriding versus carburizing as well as gas carburizing versus low-pressure carburizing, and how these processes improve gear reliability, performance, and longevity will be presented.

The key takeaways of this webinar include:

  • Understanding the elements of nitriding and process control
  • What is the nature of nitrided and carburizing layers and their role in improving gear life and engineering surface properties?
  • Highlighting the tribology of nitrided layers compared to carburized layers and their key advantages
  • Real-life applications and how nitriding and carburizing improves reliability and performance

Who Should Attend?

This webinar is of interest to mechanical engineers, automotive powertrain engineers, wind turbine engineers, quality control engineers, metallurgists, machinists, heat treaters, as well as purchasing personnel aiming to improve gear manufacturing quality and cost reduction.

About the Speakers:

Jack Kalucki, Technological Advisor, joined Nitrex Metal Inc. in 1990. His first position was Assistant Sales Engineer and was similarly in charge of Customer Service. As the company’s operations and acquisitions expanded worldwide, he moved to Contract Coordination and Management. He also headed the Heat Treating and Technology departments at the Nitrex Montreal, Canada facility for over a decade. Today, Jack Kalucki continues to work as a representative and technological advisor in North America and parts of Europe.

Mark Hemsath, Vice President Sales, Heat Treat Services Americas, has over 30 years’ experience in the heat treat industry as a furnaces capital equipment business owner, new technology champion, and director of commercial heat-treating services. His background includes highly specialized knowledge of gas nitriding, plasma nitriding, and LPC vacuum carburizing. He has earned a Bachelor of Science and a Master’s degree in Business.
