Darren Sewell has formed a new company, Weldwide Solutions Limited, to support the pipe fabrication industry with a wide range of products and technical know-how. The company?s products include inflatable pipe-purging dams, weld gas analyzers, stands, clamps and pipe freezing equipment.

The mission is to help fabricators develop and enhance welding procedures to move towards the zero-weld-failure rate attributed to gas purging. For example, oxygen accounts for about 21 percent of all surrounding air. When welding stainless steel, titanium or other corrosion-resistant materials, this oxygen causes oxidation in the weld seam, which will compromise the corrosion resistance of the welded material. Mechanical procedures, such as blasting or brushing and pickling, may remove oxidation and restore corrosion resistance but are time-consuming and very difficult or even impossible to perform when welding pipework.

The best way to achieve a clean weld is therefore to prevent oxidation in the first place by weld purging (also known as weld shielding). During weld purging, an inert gas (usually argon) which is heavier than air is used to replace the air while welding and until the weld seam cools down. This purging gas will shield the weld seam from oxidation. However, the purging gas needs to be contained around the weld. A common approach in pipe welding is to tape up the ends of the pipe and purge the whole length. This can be very time-consuming and causes high amounts of purging gas to be wasted. Also, the waiting time until purging is completed can result in unproductive labour time.

For this reason, the use of Purge dams and Quick Purge systems are recommended when welding stainless steel and titanium. Purge dams and Quick Purge considerably reduce the purge volume by sealing off a small area around the weld. They form a tight seal against further oxygen penetration and provide the appropriate flow rate to keep oxygen away from the weld root. Purge dams and Quick Purge systems will therefore significantly reduce argon usage and will help to notably decrease the purge time, thus helping to reduce your company?s carbon footprint and allow a more environmentally friendly way of welding. Moreover, time saving achieved by using Purge dams and Quick Purge will increase your company?s production rate.

By bringing together a wide range of fabrication products and welding accessories that often in the past had to be sourced from various re-sellers, Weldwide Solutions helps develop in-house procedures to maximize production output and significantly improving weld quality.
