At Birmingham's National Exhibition Center, His Royal Highness Prince Andrew, The Duke of York, officially opened the UK's MACH2010 exhibition using an advanced laser system manufactured by Renishaw plc.

After saying a few words about the importance of the advanced manufacturing sector, the Duke, who is also the UK's Special Representative for International Trade and Investment, passed his hand through a Renishaw NC4 laser tool setting system, which set-off an electronic buzzer to signify that the show was formally open.

Graham Shearsmith, MACH 2010 exhibition manager, said, "We wanted the official opening to involve something other than a traditional ribbon cutting, and to better reflect the nature of the exhibition. The laser tool setting system is ideal because it is a high-technology product, manufactured by one of our most successful exporting members."

After the opening ceremony, the Duke toured the exhibition halls, and visited the Renishaw stand where he was hosted by Marc Saunders, general manager for the company's UK Sales Division. "The Duke was particularly interested in our measurement technologies used by aerospace and automotive companies to drive down the costs of machining and inspection," Saunders stated. "He even pointed out some of our measurement equipment that he had seen in 'quality control laboratories' during his travels."

The NC4 tool setter used to open the show is a laser-based system for the automatic setting of cutting tool parameters and the detection of tool breakages. It can measure tools as small as 0.2 mm diameter and detect breakages on tools as small as 0.1 mm.
