The truck and trailer component maker has chosen two fully automated friction welding machines with a number of new innovations to join axle components at plants in Germany and the U.S.

SAF-HOLLAND (Holland, MI) will use the fully automated equipment to join axle components at plants in Bessenbach, Germany, and Warrenton, Missouri. The company already utilizes four Thompson machines at other factories around the world.

These latest machines from Thompson’s AX range are equipped with a series of features specially designed to boost productivity and accuracy. They not only include new flash handling and software control systems, but also an enhanced hydraulic control facility.

Jürgen Kestler, SAF-HOLLAND’s director of operations for Europe and Asia, said the new machine features were important factors in the company’s decision to purchase the equipment from the UK-based manufacturer.

“Our product range is expanding so it’s essential that our friction welding operations are highly-flexible and efficient. We also want to use the best technology available to deliver top quality trailer axles and suspension systems to our customers,” he added.

Thompson’s AX range also offers moveable clamps for accommodating a wide variety of component lengths, roller rail slideways for smooth friction head movement and a choice of heavy duty flash removal options.

Thompson produces machines for component makers in the aerospace, commercial vehicle, construction machine and mineral exploration industries. It marked the 50th anniversary of its first-ever friction weld with a special party in May.
