After more than 27 years with Laboratory Testing Inc. (LTI; Hartfield, PA), mechanical testing specialist Glenn Derstine has retired. The owners of the family-run business congratulated him at the company’s holiday luncheon with a plaque and gift.

Derstine joined the company in 1988 from Rex Heat Treat, formerly known as J.W. Rex Company. He managed the mechanical testing department and machining for his first 25 years at LTI. In preparation for retirement, he began working in 2012 with a third-generation family member, Brandon McVaugh, to transition him into the role. McVaughn served as the assistant manager of the department from August 2012 until he was promoted to destructive testing manager for mechanical testing and machine shop in 2013. At that time, Derstine became the senior technical advisor for mechanical testing, the position he held until retirement.

During his years with the company, Derstine helped to significantly expand the capabilities of both the mechanical testing department and the machine shop. The mechanical testing department currently performs an extensive list of services that includes tensile, charpy impact and hardness testing, fracture toughness and fatigue testing, stress rupture and creep testing, and more. Heat treat capability testing is also offered to evaluate the effects of heat treatments on the mechanical properties of materials. Test results provide customers with information about the suitability of their materials for their intended applications. The machine shop is capable of efficiently preparing all specimens needed for destructive testing.

“Glenn will truly be missed by all of us and by the customers who have worked with him for so many years. We appreciate the extra few years of service during the transition and know he is anxious to start enjoying his retirement” said Mike McVaugh, the president of the company.

LTI is a family-owned independent testing and metrology laboratory, in business since 1984. They offer materials testing and analysis services including mechanical, chemical, metallurgical and corrosion testing, nondestructive testing, root cause failure analysis, calibration services, dimensional inspection and test specimen machining. All test and inspection results are provided in certified reports. The laboratory specializes in metal and polymer testing, but also analyzes powdered metals, ores, ferroalloys, composites and ceramics.

They are accredited by the PRI Nadcap program in materials and nondestructive testing and by A2LA to ISO/IEC 17025 for mechanical, metallurgical and chemical testing, dimensional inspection and calibration services. Their metrology division provides dimensional inspection services and NIST-traceable calibration services for measuring hand tools, masters and a wide-range of measuring instruments and equipment. On-site calibration, repairs, new instruments and replacement parts are offered.
