Automated arc welding just got even easier. New sensors in the head of TRUMPF’s arc welding torch combine with an intelligent software solution to enable the TruArc Weld cobot to calculate its own weld path and correct it live while welding. The Smart Seam Tracking function simplifies and expedites the programming of weld joints to indicate where robots need to change direction.

“With this technology, the welding robot can essentially program itself,” says Adi Buerkler, product manager for TruLaser Tube and Weld. “This technology is growing even more important as the number of skilled welders shrinks. Smart Seam Weld Tracking technology facilitates the transition into automated arc welding for new users and creates a clear competitive edge.”

Easy programming and time savings

With Smart Seam Tracking, the TruArc Weld cobot is ready to go in a matter of seconds. When using conventional welding robots, production workers must program a new weld path into the robot control each time a welding seam will change direction. This can be time-consuming, especially when it comes to parts with complex geometries. Fortunately, the new Smart Seam Tracking function makes the whole process a whole lot simpler. All the user needs to do is to place the welding robot in the start position, and the technology takes care of the rest. The cobot uses the sensor to determine the weld path automatically. The system software quickly calculates the joint type and seam length, then creates the program for the part.

“Even for complex parts like spiral arcs, the whole process just takes seconds to complete,” says Buerkler. “Programming is easy and production workers don’t need any specialist knowledge. The intuitive user interface can be used to carry out a wide range of welding tasks, such as sealing runs and identical weld seams.”

Less scrap and improved process stability

Smart Seam Tracking helps companies save time and cut costs, while also making life easier for workers on the shop floor. The robot’s ability to automatically correct its weld path makes the whole process more stable. It also simplifies the task of handling tighter tolerances and dealing with warping or distortion.

“This is the right solution for any business looking to use automation to boost productivity,” says Buerkler. “It’s particularly useful for fabricators who weld large and complex parts. Creating a customized weld path for each part is an excellent way to achieve consistently high quality.”

Areas that can benefit from this innovative and efficient method include components for wind turbines and screw conveyors for the animal feed industry, to name just two examples.

The Smart Seam Weld Tracking technology is available as an option on new TruArc Weld 1000 arc welding machines and may be retrofitted to some newer TruArc Weld machines with CMT (Cold Metal Transfer), an optional technology package that ensures high process reliability and energy-reduced welding with fewer weld spatters and reduced distortion.
